JSA templates that are not pretending to be a SWMS
A Job Safety Analysis is a written risk assessment for work that is not high-risk construction work — or extra paperwork a principal wants on the gate. These pages each have a unique filled example. Roofing, rooftop solar, live electrical and a fall greater than 2 m still need a SWMS.
A JSA is not a legal substitute on HRCW
If the task has a fall greater than 2 m, is on or near energised electrical installations, is rooftop solar or roofing, confined space, demolition of a load-bearing element, or anything else on the HRCW list, use a SWMS. Victoria: OHS Act 2004 / OHS Regulations 2017. Everywhere else: model WHS. The practical line is the same.
Looking for a JSEA? Western Australia often uses that name for the same family of job-step risk documents. See JSEA template.
JSA by trade
Painting JSA template
Ground-floor interiors under 2 m. First-floor eaves are a SWMS.
Joinery JSA template
Ground-floor cabinets. Not a substitute if you go on the roof or near live services.
Tiling JSA template
Ground-floor wet areas. Same site with roof work still needs a SWMS for the roof.
Warehouse JSA template
Picking and pallets. Forklifts in the same aisle can flip this to HRCW.
Electrical JSA (isolated fit-off)
Isolated, proved-dead fit-off. Energised boards go to the SWMS page.
Maintenance JSA template
Low-risk plant on the floor. Confined space is a different document.
Frequently asked questions
What is a JSA template by trade?
A trade JSA is a Job Safety Analysis aimed at that work — painting, joinery, tiling, warehouse picking, isolated electrical fit-off, low-risk maintenance. It is a best-practice risk assessment. It is not a legal substitute for a SWMS on high-risk construction work.
Is a trade JSA free to generate?
The trial lets you generate and download a PDF with no credit card. These pages are examples, not documents you photocopy onto another site.
When do I still need a SWMS?
Whenever an HRCW category applies — fall greater than 2 m, live electrical, roofing, rooftop solar, confined space, and the rest. Use the SWMS hub for those. A JSA on the gate as well is extra paperwork, not a replacement.
Are these JSAs valid in NSW, VIC, QLD and WA?
There is no prescribed JSA format under model WHS. The generator still cites the WHS Act/Regulation, or Victoria’s Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and OHS Regulations 2017, when you pick the state. WA searchers looking for a JSEA should use the JSEA page — same family of document.
